Are you making improvements to the Explorer Car Park?

Explorer Car Park is within a green belt area, which means permanent development of these acres is strictly regulated. We have improved some fields with a hard-core surface and made improvements to the drainage systems in all areas, and we have also improved pedestrian safety. All connecting roads, tracks and pathways, inspected daily, are repaired and maintained on a continual basis.

We appreciate our surfaces can be uneven in areas as part of the natural greenbelt landscape and we advise drivers to adapt driving behaviour according to conditions.

What is the Rainy Day Guarantee and how can I use it?

Our new and improved Rainy Day Guarantee is here to help make sure you get a great day out, even if the weather isn't too good.

If it rains continually for an hour or more during your visit, we'll give you a free day ticket for a return visit later in the year.

This means that you can choose your date and enjoy great online savings without having to worry about the weather:

No more checking the weather forecast - if it rains continuously for over an hour then you can come back for FREE later in the year.

Visiting when the weather isn't so good often means the queues are shorter, plus there are many indoor attractions and restaurants to explore.

Our Rainy Day Guarantee does not apply to Annual Passes or tickets purchased on the day, as you already have the flexibility to come on a day where the weather is better. It also doesn't include any additional products purchased for your initial visit, such as (but not limited to) Hotel stays, Fastrack or Meal Deals. Read our Rainy Day Guarantee page for further details, terms and conditions and our confirmed ‘Rainy Days’.

What Health and Safety procedures do you have in place?

HEALTH AND SAFETY

The quality and safety of all our rides and attractions are of the utmost importance and therefore a considerable amount of time and effort is spent on making all visits a safe and fun experience. Merlin Entertainments Group who own the theme park are Europe’s leading operator and developer of visitor attractions. Due to the complexity of theme park operations in the UK a summary of all main health and safety requirements is set out below:

Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974 – This is the principle Act that applies to the company and is to ensure that all workers in all occupations are protected by law. Its purpose is to provide one comprehensive integrated system of law, dealing with health, safety and welfare of employees and members of the public who are affected by work activities. The Act is written in very general terms and does not require many specific requirements for managing health and safety at work. Instead, the Act places a general duty on employers to provide safe systems of work that are so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to health.

Under the HASWA Act 1974 are many specific regulations which relate to work activities on site. The principle requirement being to undertake risk assessments to identify ‘hazards’ and assess the risk under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

- The health and safety policy is signed by the Chief Executive Officer for Merlin Entertainments Group and the Divisional Director for the park.

- Risk Assessments are undertaken by all departmental Managers with reference to the work activities that they manage. Risk Assessments are reviewed at least annually or if any significant change takes place with regard to a work activity or area of work. Due to the volume of risk assessment documents it is not possible to send these out on an individual basis.

- The park is covered by Public Liability Insurance. The amount of cover provided by this policy is &10 million. The Policy is with ACE Insurance (Policy No: 47UKAO7552).

- The park is duel enforced by the local Health and Safety Executive and Environmental Health Department.

Engineering/Maintenance of Rides:

All new rides must be designed and manufactured in accordance with strict standards and comply with UK requirements. Any new ride specifications with associated calculations are submitted to an outside independent inspection engineer in order to establish that the design is sound. This includes all aspects of the ride, i.e. forces involved, type of restraint, type of passenger carrying unit, any restrictions such as height, this process being known as ‘verification’.

In addition to this all existing rides and new rides have an ‘In-Service Annual Inspection’ by outside independent inspection engineers to ensure the safety and integrity of the ride for each season. Daily inspections are also carried out by our own qualified engineers.

Ride/Attraction Operation:

The operation of all rides on park is conformant with strict documented procedures and manufacturers guidance. The rides team have a considerable amount of experience in operating rides and attractions which ensures safe operating standards.

All ride operators are over 18 and undergo a company medical for fitness. They are also rigorously trained to a high level of competence specifically related to each ride they operate. Operators undergo supervised training hours for each ride. All ride attendants are over 16.

Chessington Zoo:

Chessington Zoo at Chessington World of Adventures Resort is operated under strict licensing conditions as established within the Zoo Licensing Act 1981. A dedicated team of experienced zookeepers cares for the collection of birds, mammals and reptiles. All the birds, mammals and reptiles are protected behind suitably constructed barriers where the adventurer is able to see the exhibit but unable to touch.

Food Safety/Hygiene:

The park operates food catering outlets which are operated by trained employees. The food units operate in accordance with the Food Safety Act 1990 and are regularly inspected by the local Environmental Health Department. The park also contracts an independent consultancy which carries food safety/hygiene inspections twice a year on all food retail outlets on park.

First Aid Facilities:

The park has First Aid facilities which are operated by a dedicated team of qualified first aiders. Each park also has a defibrillator located in each facility with a team of employees trained to operate this equipment. First aiders are trained to deal with all minor injuries on site and also in the initial stages of any major injuries that may occur until the emergency services arrive at the scene. The park has hospitals nearby with Accident and Emergency facilities.

The facilities also operate a lost person collection point so that they may be reunited for those responsible for them.

EMERGENCY PLANNING

The park has a contingency plan in the event of an emergency. The emergency plan covers incidents such as Fire, Bomb, Ride/Attraction/Boat Disaster. The emergency plans for the park has been developed in conjunction with the local emergency services who have regular meetings with the park regarding emergency procedures.

SECURITY

The park has a dedicated security team who are able to deal with any minor security issues on site. The security team spend their time patrolling the park and dealing with any security related matters. The security team is also trained to deal with any emergency incidents that occur on park.

NB: Please note that Chessington World of Adventures Resort employs a full-time Health and Safety Manager who facilitates the company’s commitment and compliance with health and safety legislation.

Do you conduct bag searches?

As part of our security procedures, we conduct bag searches at our entrances.

We recommend bringing the bare minimum with you to ensure that any search can be done as smoothly and quickly as possible. Also, to avoid queuing at our busiest times, if you don’t need your bag until later in the day, consider leaving this securely in your vehicle, which you can return to to collect your bag whenever needed.

Why do I need to bring my documents for Ride Access Pass every two years?

Many conditions change over time, and our staff are not medically trained to know each individual’s requirements, to enable them to get the best out of their visit to our attractions.

Following guest feedback, we have now increased the length of validity for our Registration Cards from 12 to 24 months, meaning registrations will now be less frequent.

View this in our help centre | Still need help, get in touch

What changes have Chessington World of Adventures Resort made for Ride Access Pass in 2019?

This year, following guest feedback, we have made three key changes to Ride Access Pass at Chessington, on a trial basis. Please note that these changes are exclusive to Chessington and are not currently in place at THORPE PARK Resort, Alton Towers Resort or LEGOLAND Windsor Resort:

  • All new Ride Access Pass registrations last 24 months from the date of registration.
  • Ride Access Pass users do not need to wear a wristband if they have a valid gold Registration Card.
  • We now offer four colour categories of wristband.

The categories of pass we offer are as follows:

ORANGE: Pass user may ride all rides and attractions unaccompanied.*

PURPLE: Pass user must be accompanied by a companion aged 14+ when riding attractions with complex evacuation procedures (detailed in this guide), and can ride all other attractions unaccompanied.*

BLUE: Pass user must be accompanied by a companion aged 14+, and can ride all attractions.*

YELLOW: Pass user must be accompanied by a companion aged 14+, and can only ride attractions suitable for non-ambulant riders (detailed in this guide)*

*All ride restrictions still apply.

What is the Ride Access Pass and how do I apply?

Ride Access Passes are reserved for adventurers who do not understand the concept of queuing; have difficulties with everyday social interaction; have a limited capacity to follow instruction or to understand others’ emotional feelings or expressions, and may become agitated or distressed having to wait for extended periods of time; and permanently non-ambulant guests.

Please note: Having a registered disability does not mean you automatically receive a Ride Access Pass.

You can register for a Ride Access Pass using our online registration form, or by bringing one of the following documents to our Guest Help & Information team:

  • A certified NHS letter from your doctor or consultant clearly stating why you are eligible for the Pass (dated within last 2 years)
  • A letter or statement from a professional body (e.g. a Nurse or a BUPA Healthcare Advisor) clearly stating why you are eligible for the Pass (dated within last 2 years)

  • A blue badge along with an additional form of photographic identification

Pass users may be accompanied by a maximum of 3 companions on any one ride.

How does the Ride Access Pass work?

Following guest feedback, we are now proud to offer four categories of Ride Access Pass at Chessington World of Adventures Resort, which we have implemented on a trial basis. Categories are as follows:

ORANGE: Pass user may ride all rides and attractions unaccompanied.*

PURPLE: Pass user must be accompanied by a companion aged 14+ when riding attractions with complex evacuation procedures, and can ride all other attractions unaccompanied.*

BLUE: Pass user must be accompanied by a companion aged 14+, and can ride all attractions.*

YELLOW: Pass user must be accompanied by a companion aged 14+, and can only ride attractions suitable for non-ambulant riders*

*All ride restrictions still apply.

RIDE ACCESS PASS PROCESS

  • Pass users must visit Guest Help & Information every day, where they’ll pick up a green Ride Access Pass card. Adventurers also have the option to collect a wristband, if they do not wish to show their gold Registration Card at each ride.
  • Most rides have a designated entrance for Ride Access Pass users. The entrance for each individual attraction is highlighted in the Accessibility Guide.
  • On arrival, the Ride Attendant will ask to see today’s Ride Access Pass, alongside either a valid gold ID card or a wristband.
  • Before allowing access to the ride, the Ride Attendant will mark the card with the time at which the Pass User can enjoy their next attraction – placing them in a ‘virtual queue’. (This time is calculated by adding the queue time of your current attraction, to the time now.)

Once your pass is full, you can return to Guest Help & Information, where we’ll replace it with a new one (you must bring your completed card).

A maximum of three companions may accompany the pass user on any one attraction, and can be interchanged throughout the day. For some pass users, a companion will be compulsory – further details can be found in the Accessibility Guide.

Height, size and other safety restrictions also apply, and are detailed in the Accessibility Guide as well as on signage throughout the park.

What are the accepted forms of proof for the Ride Access Pass?

Please note that having a registered disability does not mean you automatically receive a Ride Access Pass. An application for a Ride Access Pass is made at Guest Help & Information.

Documentation is required to support all applications and staff reserve the right to refuse a Pass to anyone who does not show appropriate documentation.

If you require a Ride Access Pass you will need to provide one of the following forms of documentation.

• A certified NHS Letter from your doctor or consultant clearly stating why you are eligible for the policy.
• A letter from a professional body (e.g Nurse, Bupa Healthcare Advisor) clearly stating why you are eligible for the policy.

You will also need one companion who is happy to use the rides and attractions with the holder of the Ride Access Pass (must be over the age of 14 to offer assistance)

What are your requirements for someone to be a carer?

  • In certain situations (such as extreme weather conditions, mechanical problems or power interruptions) it may be necessary for adventurers to be evacuated from a ride, possibly from the highest point.
  • For safety reasons, adventurers with a disability must be accompanied on to rides by at least one companion over the age of 14, unless otherwise stated.
  • To qualify for a Ride Access Pass, ambulant Adventurers must have at least one carer over the age of 14.
  • Adventurers who are unable to walk unaided must be accompanied by a minimum of one companion over the age of 14 on rides that involve a complex evacuation procedure. • Companions accompanying a disabled companion on to rides must sit in the same carriage, boat, seat or row, and they must be able to assist with loading and off-loading (including transfer to and from wheelchairs). Our ride hosts will provide instruction but, for everyone’s safety, they cannot help with lifting.

Our Rides & Attractions

What is Go Ape in the dark?

Designed for younger adventurers (over 1m tall) and fun-loving families, the Halloween adventure is heightened by the darkness of the forest which comes alive at night. Scramble through a series of suspended tunnels, clamber across weird wobbly walkways, and negotiate all sorts of other tricky (or treaty) obstacles, before leaping into the night air and zooming down hair-raising zip wires, as eerie owls and forest wildlife provide a spooky soundtrack.

Go Ape Chessington is opening up after nightfall for Halloween fun in October and November on the following dates, with sessions running from 4-7pm every 15 minutes:

  • 12th October
  • 13th October
  • 19th October – 3rd November

The hour-long Halloween Treetop Adventure costs £18 per person.

Is Black Buccaneer open?

After sailing the high seas for 30 years, Black Buccaneer has run aground and unfortunately won’t be setting sail in 2019. Keep a ‘weather eye’ on the horizon though to see if the most fearsome ship in Pirates’ Cove will take to the seas again.

Please see further FAQs below:

Why has Black Buccaneer been removed from the Chessington World of Adventures Resort website?

Ahoy! After sailing the high seas for 30 years, Black Buccaneer has run aground and unfortunately won’t be setting sail in 2019. Keep a ‘weather eye’ on the horizon though to see if the most fearsome ship in Pirates’ Cove will take to the seas again.

When will Black Buccaneer return?
Unfortunately, Black Buccaneer will not be setting sail for the duration of the 2019 season. Keep a ‘weather eye’ though on our Social Media channels to see if the fearsome ship will sail the seas once again.

Will Chessington be getting a new ride to replace Black Buccaneer?
Avast ye matey! Black Buccaneer is under the watchful eye of our Pirate Chiefs to see if it can sail the seas once again, so keep a ‘weather eye’ on that there horizon.

I came to Chessington to ride Black Buccaneer and it’s not open, I’m upset!
There’s over 40 rides and attractions alongside a Zoo and SEA LIFE centre here at Chessington, so there’s lots to do to release your inner pirate! Why not tame the reckless Griffon’s Galleon or ride Sea Dragons into the sunset instead?

What is wrong with Black Buccaneer?
Black Buccaneer has sailed for over 30 years, and as such, needs some PLC (Pirate Loving Care).

Is Safari Skyway still open?

Safari Skyway has been a firm favourite for many years and in fact was one of the original rides at Chessington World of Adventures Resort as it opened as a Theme Park back in 1987. As a result of ongoing maintenance issues, the decision has been made to retire Safari Skyway from the Chessington ride offering.  This was a difficult decision to make as we know the ride has been a firm favourite amongst our Adventurers over the years however with exciting new shows and attractions planned for the 2017 season and beyond, we’re committed to ensuring the continued development of the Resort.

Are there any age restrictions?

Good question!

Generally rides and attractions are only restricted by height (and availability of course).  Often smaller children must be accompanied by an adult (over 16 years old) - you can check the details for each ride on our Full Ride List page.

Bear in mind that on some of our smaller rides and activities for children, adults are only allowed if they are accompanying a child.  This is also shown on relevant rides on the Full Ride List page.

No child or children under the age of 12 will be admitted to the Attraction unless they are accompanied by an adult aged 18 years or over. Admission is governed by the Park rules and can be found in our T's&C's

Parents and guardians: please do not leave your child unattended while experiencing our rides as we are unable to look after them whilst you do this. If you have a particular problem with this advice, please talk to a member of our team.

What time do the rides open?

During the main season, we aim to open all of the rides at the same time as the park (generally at 10am).

There may be occasions when certain rides are unavailable - of course we try and keep this to a minimum and endeavour to update the park status page as often as possible.

The entrances to ride queue lines close at the same time as the park closes, but the ride will keep running until the queue is cleared (subject to availability).

Check our opening times for details.

Which rides can I go on if I have a torso measurement of 51” or more?

As you would expect, all guests must be fully strapped in on all of our rides. Similar to smaller guests being subject to height restrictions, larger Adventurers are recommended to follow this advice.

If your torso is approaching 51 inches or more you may be unable to ride the following rides.  This is because tight shoulder and lap bar restraints need to be in place for health & safety reasons.

  • Rameses Revenge
  • Dragon's Fury
  • Rattlesnake
  • Scorpion Express
  • Jungle Bus
  • KOBRA
  • Vampire

If your torso is approaching 45 inches, you may not be able to ride Monkey Swinger.

Vampire, Dragon’s Fury and Rameses Revenge also have a maximum height restriction of approximately 1.95 metres.

Please be aware that all of our rides and attractions have different restrictions and requirements, with some having more generous shoulder and lap restraints which are suitable for most Adventurers. Should you have any further queries or concerns, please feel free to contact the Guest Help & Information team.

Please note, we make no guarantee of the availability or suitability of these attractions.

Is Bubbleworks still open?

Bubbleworks, previously Professor Burps’ Bubbleworks, has been a part of Chessington World of Adventures Resort since 1990.  As a much loved ride, Bubbleworks has created many happy memories for guests over the last 26 years. The ride has lost some of its magic and sparkle in recent years and we feel now is the time to bid farewell to the Bubbles and introduce something brand new and equally magical for families in the future.

The last public rides on Bubbleworks were held on Tuesday 6th September 2016 and the ride is now closed. The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure opened on Saturday 18th March 2017.

What time do the rides close?

It's the ride queue line that closes at the advertised time, not the ride itself! So for example, if it's a 5pm ride close, head to your favourite ride at 4:55pm and you'll still be able to enjoy the ride!

What are you Ride Safety policies?

  • For your comfort and safety, please note that the information shown here is in addition to the general ride restrictions that apply to all adventurers. These are shown at the entrance to each ride and it is the responsibility of all adventurers to check these before deciding to ride.
  • Several rides are unsuitable for adventurers with heart, neck, or back conditions, or expectant mothers, and we strongly recommend that anyone having undergone recent surgery or having been subject to an injury does not board these attractions.
  • On many of our rides, adventurers must be capable of bracing themselves in an upright position and these are shown in the downloadable Accessibility Guide.
  • On all rides, adventurers are required to keep arms and legs inside the carriage, boat, or gondola and remain seated at all times.
  • As well as complying with all ride restrictions, it’s a good idea to watch our rides in motion before deciding to board.

Why aren't there child, senior concessions or student rates any more?

We have worked hard to simplify our entry ticket prices for all guests, and have switched to a great value per person ticketing system.

  • Our Online Saver Tickets are great value for money for all ages
  • Children under 3 years of age don't need a ticket at all
  • Disabled users can bring a free helper with them, and a second helper at a concessionary rate

Our pricing for the above mentioned guests reflects the fact that they are able to experience most of the rides and attractions and can therefore enjoy it equally with other guests.

On-the-day prices are higher, so it's best to book online to confirm entry and get our best price.

When are the busiest and quietest times to visit?

Chessington World of Adventures Resort is Britain's Wildest Adventure, so it’s inevitable that there will be days when it is busy. However, with a bit of planning, you can still have the most amazing time!

It can be difficult to say how busy the Theme Park will be on a day that you choose to visit, clearly school holiday and event periods are busier than mid week term time dates.

To make the most of your visit on a busier day, arrive early, consider buying Fastrack tickets and our top tip is to leave the popular rides until last, this way you'll be going the opposite way to the crowds.

Does Chessington World of Adventures Resort have SEND provisions for Schools?

We understand how difficult it is to plan a school trip, not to mention the added pressure of ensuring all students have an amazing experience. To ensure every member of your group has an amazing day we offer a range of support for students with SEND.

- Our Ride Access Pass allows students to avoid the queue lines. They can visit our Zoo, SEA LIFE Centre or fantastic live entertainment until their ride time.*
- We admit one to one carers into the theme park free of charge. Ensuring your student feels fully supported by a person they trust throughout their visit.
- Our Resort Access Guide explains specific attraction restrictions set by the manufacturer, so your students avoid any confusion on the day.

To access these facilities please bring any of the documents outlined in our Disability Policy, an EHCP/statement or a letter headed signed document from the head teacher of your school (please ensure initials of each student and a brief outline of their SEND is included, we will not retain this information after we have authorised the facilities).

Our dedicated schools team are happy to support the needs of your group, if you have any further questions about our SEND provision, simply email cwschools@chessington.co.uk

*Please note, we will require a letter headed letter from the school stating how many children require the Ride Access Pass. We require a teacher to child ratio of 1:1 for the issuance of a Ride Access Pass.

For more information on accessibility at Chessington World of Adventures Resort please visit here.

What Conservation Projects do you run?

CHESSINGTON CONSERVATION FUND - PROTECTING NATURE'S FUTURE

We love animals at Chessington World of Adventures Resort and, in 2011, we’re proud to have launched the Chessington Conservation Fund (CCF).

CCF was set up to raise money to help protect the future of nature and wildlife through conservation work and education at Chessington Zoo in Surrey, in the local community and worldwide.

The Zoo is already involved with many national and international breeding programmes for rare and endangered species with BIAZA and EAZA. We’re taking this further by partnering with a number of charities and organisations involved in the conservation of endangered species and the protection of their natural habitats.

For further information of our Conservation efforts, please visit here.

Do you offer charitable donations for organisations?

Chessington World of Adventures receives numerous requests for support from many worthwhile causes and unfortunately we are unable to help everybody.

We are delighted to support Merlin Entertainments’ special charity – Merlin’s Magic Wand – to provide magical experiences to many children who are seriously ill, disabled or disadvantaged.

Because of the good work we already do we can only offer support to a small number of requests within the immediate locality of the park. If you are not in our neighbourhood we are unable to support you.

Please visit here for our Charity Request form.

Due to the volume of requests we receive every day, we cannot respond to them all. If you have not heard from us within 2 weeks, then we regret to inform you that your request has been unsuccessful.
