Asiatic Lion at Chessington

Asiatic Lions

Overview

There are two Asiatic Lions at Chessington Zoo, male Ashok and female Kalinga.

In the wild Asiatic Lions live in a small area of India called the Gir Forest National Park. There are estimated to be only 350 left in the wild, the last sighting of an Asiatic lion outside India was in southern Iran in 1942.

The difference between males and females is very distinctive. Males weigh much more than females and they also have a big mane of hair around their neck.

FUN FACT: A lion’s roar can be heard up to five miles away!
