The Chessington Conservation Fund (CCF), a conservation charity set up by Chessington World of Adventures Resort in 2011, is proud to announce a recent partnership with Dambari Wildlife Trust in Zimbabwe in response to the growing global rhino-poaching crisis.
CCF’s partnership with Dambari Wildlife Trust centres on 'in-situ' support of the Trust’s monitoring, conservation and protection of rhinos. The partnership has raised enough money to gift Dambari with the purchase of a Land Rover, along with a range of equipment including binoculars, cameras and identification cards to aid the Rangers.
Both species of African rhinoceros are specially protected in Zimbabwe, but are under great threat from poaching. The Zimbabwe National Rhino Management Plan aims for an annual population increase of 5% and to that end Dambari Wildlife Trust – now with the assistance of CCF - is committed to supporting rangers in the Matopos National Park.
Two members of the Chessington team visited Dambari Wildlife Trust in February 2015 to see the work first hand. They met the Matopos National Park staff and Rangers to see how the partnership helps to conserve and protect the black and white rhino through training and education and support with equipment, and to hand over the brand new Land Rover. They even spotted some of the rhinos roaming the National Park, including a pregnant female and tracks of tiny baby rhino hooves, proving that the rhinos in Matapos are thriving with the protection from the Rangers.
Guests visiting Chessington World of Adventures Resort during the summer will not only have a chance to see rhinos for themselves – they will also have a chance to learn more about all the work done by Dambari Wildlife Trust through a series of videos made by the Chessington team during the visit to Zimbabwe earlier this year.
Guests can also assist with supporting CCF by heading to Chessington on 20th June for the brand new Roar and Explore event where from 6pm until dusk Chessington will re-open for a one-off evening of fun and games, with a chance to ride ZUFARI! Ride into Africa at dusk to see rhino first hand, plus an opportunity to meet the many animal residents, watch exciting animal presentations, visit stalls and take part in special fun games and activities. Entry to this special event costs just £6 (under 5s free), with all proceeds going directly to CCF – all staff are offering their time for free, too!
