Sumatran Tigers
Overview
Mother and daughter, Ratna and Kelabu, are the parks Sumatran Tigers, one of the Worlds most endangered animals.
In the wild Sumatran Tigers live in the National Parks on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. They are very endangered and it is estimated that there are only around 300 of these amazing creatures left in the wild. All species of tiger are under threat and there are now more tigers living in captivity than there is in the wild.
Chessington Zoo has been very successful in breeding the Sumatran Tigers and have welcomed five cubs in the space of two years. The first litter of cubs, Hujan, Bayu and Deru, who were born in 2006, were moved to a Zoo in Holland in 2008 to help continue breeding this endangered species. Just after they were moved mother Ratna gave birth to another two cubs, Kabus and Kelabu. Male cub Kabus was moved to Belfast Zoo in 2009 and he will eventually be joined by a female tiger as part of the breeding programme.
FUN FACT: No two tigers will ever have the same stripes – they are as unique as the human fingerprint. Most tigers will have more than 100 stripes and if you were to shave off their fur, they would still have them!
