Persian Leopard

Persian Leopards

Overview

Living next door to the tigers, and almost as rare are the beautifully spotted Persian Leopards.

In the wild these big cats are found in the area formerly known as Persia, which includes countries such as Iran, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Due to the nature of the terrain, and the political climate in these countries, it is very difficult to undertake up-to-date surveys on their numbers, however this species is currently listed as endangered.

They are capable of leaping 20 feet forward in a single bound and can jump 10 feet high!

Kalaf, the male leopard, was born on the 28th March 1994 which makes him the oldest big cat living at Chessington Zoo.

FUN FACT: Leopards will often carry their food up into the trees to make sure that no one else steals their dinner!

Persian Leopards can be found in Trail of the Kings.

Those cats still POUNCE!

We went to the Trail of the Kings today just as the big cats had been fed. They each had a huge chunk of meat that they were chomping on. The Persian Leopard was lying down just underneath the window into it's enclosure. My daughter was fascinated and had her face pressed upon the glass looking in. She was in no way disturbing him, but all of a sudden the leopard leapt up against the glass looking right at her. The leopard hit the glass with its jaws and all 4 paws and bounced off, but it was quite the experience!

Wow!!!

When i went to chessington, the first place i went to was Animal Land. I saw all the animals i have never seen before. When i went to see the leopard, i couldn't see it, but then it just jumped in my face and i was SHOCKED!!!! I was lucky there was a glass there! I also saw the spiders and snakes. It was scarey because i don't like spiders! But it was a fun day.
