Binturong
Overview
The binturong is a nocturnal animal common throughout Southeast Asia and you can see three of them in the Zoo at Chessington World of Adventures.
They were nicknamed bearcats by the natives who thought they were a cross between bears and cats. Binturongs spend almost all of their time climbing around in the trees and they use their tail like a fifth limb to help them hold on to branches.
Awam and Jelita originally came to Chessington Zoo form Singapore Zoo in China. On 21st October 2009 mother Jelita gave birth to a female cub, she was named Ayu which means pretty.
FUN FACT: Binturongs give off a scent which is very similar to the smell of freshly made popcorn!
