Hissing Cockroaches

Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches

Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches originate from the tropical forests of Madagascar! Being omnivores they eat a wide range of dead, organic matter. They can move very quickly, covering up to three miles per hour and can lay eggs which may contain up to seventy babies in each case.

FUN FACT: These cockroaches have white blood and can stop their own hearts with no ill effect.

Fruit Beetles

The fruit beetle can be found in the forests of Africa. They can grow up to thirty millimetres long and their diet consists of fruit and wood. Their life cycle only lasts a few short months and most of their life is spent as larvae in the substrate.

FUN FACT: As larvae, they like to eat rotting wood and make their cocoons out of it before turning into beetles.

Giant African Land Snails

These beautiful snails live in the tropical forests in Africa. As their name suggest, they are quite big! In the wild, some have grown up to 30cm in length! Some scientists say that snail slime is one of the most effective cures for acne and eczema!

FUN FACT: Snails hear through their feet. The sound vibrations travel through their underbelly, or foot.

Caribbean Hermit Crab

Caribbean Hermit Crab

Caribbean Hermit Crabs live in colonies of 100 or more around Central America. They live on the land but need warm humid air to keep their gills wet to keep them breathing. Caribbean Hermit Crabs have very distinctive patterns and colours, ranging from a pale red to a darn brown. To protect themselves they have a large purple pincer and a small pincer.

FUN FACT: Hermit Crabs often change shells till they find the perfect one to live in and fights often breakout over them.

Pink-Toed Tarantula

The pink-toed tarantula is native to South America, Costa Rica and Brazil and can grow to a leg span of up to fifteen centimeters. They are carnivores and like to eat crickets, small mice and even lizards. This species prefer to live up in the trees, lying in webbed hammocks for food to pass by!

FUN FACT: The pink-toed tarantulas are generally active during the day and like to build extensive webs.
