Amphibians
Overview
Learn more about Creepy Cave's Amphibians below:
Poison Arrow Frogs
Poison Arrow Frogs originate from South America and come in a variety of colours including blue, green and yellow. Poison Arrow Frogs lay small batches of 2-6 eggs every few months and once complete, the female's role is done. It is up to the male to nurture the eggs and tadpoles until they are old enough to look after themselves.
FUN FACT: Poison Arrow Frogs catch their prey, like small crickets, by using their sticky tongue
American Toad
American Toads’ smooth, thick skin produces chemicals which helps defend it from predators. The chemicals are in fact poisonous to humans. They can live almost anywhere, as long as there is freshwater pool nearby when they are still tadpoles, and are more active at night. During winter, American Toads hibernate by digging themselves deep underground.
FUN FACT: Toads do not need to drink water – they simply absorb it through their skin!
Red Eyed Tree Frogs
Hidden in the rainforests of Central and Southern America, Red Eyed Tree Frogs are pretty quiet frogs, choosing to stay still and hidden from predators most of the day. To startle predators they can pop their eyes out abruptly and the bright red colour can shock the predator enough to give the frog them time to escape.
FUN FACT: A groups of Red Eyed Tree Frogs are called an Army
